Brunswick Community Primary School Curriculum

Primary National Curriculum

The national curriculum provides pupils with an introduction to the essential knowledge that they need to be educated citizens. It introduces pupils to the best that has been thought and said; and helps engender an appreciation of human creativity and achievement. The national curriculum is just one element in the education of every child. There is time and space in the school day and in each week, term and year to range beyond the national curriculum specifications. The national curriculum provides an outline of core knowledge around which teachers can develop exciting and stimulating lessons to promote the development of pupils’ knowledge, understanding and skills as part of the wider school curriculum.

Brunswick Community Primary School Curriculum Intent

At Brunswick Community Primary School, we are committed to being the best school we can be, and our children will tell you the same. Our goal is to nurture every child's potential, equipping them for the challenges, responsibilities, and opportunities they will encounter in modern Britain and beyond. Every child is recognised as a unique individual. We celebrate and welcome differences within our school community. We aim to celebrate success out of school as well as within school. Our dynamic, engaging, and carefully sequenced curriculum is central to achieving this, providing a wide range of learning experiences that inspire curiosity and foster academic success. Each topic unit is thoughtfully designed to immerse children in the essential knowledge, skills, and understanding they need to excel in school and foster a lifelong love of learning. With History and Geography as the core drivers of our curriculum, each term focuses on a central theme that links these subjects, broadening children’s perspectives and sparking their curiosity about the past and present world. Our commitment to a knowledge-rich curriculum begins with a clear outline of the key concepts we aim for our students to master. These concepts are revisited and reinforced throughout the year and across year groups to ensure continuity and depth of understanding. Children engage with a variety of dynamic, cross-curricular topics such as The Great Fire of London, Bright Lights, Big City, Frozen Kingdoms, and Explorers of Frozen Kingdoms. Each element of the curriculum—key knowledge, vocabulary, and skills—is carefully planned and sequenced. This deliberate structure helps students revisit prior learning, build schemas, and retain knowledge over time. To support learning at home, we provide Knowledge Organisers; each half-term. These resources offer valuable tools for both children and parents to reinforce and extend classroom
learning.

Our staff work collaboratively to plan the curriculum, breaking down the required knowledge and skills for each phase of learning. This ensures that each year builds on what has been taught before, providing a strong foundation for future learning. This approach helps ensure that children make steady progress as they move through school, with each year preparing them for the next. We place great importance on spiritual, moral, cultural, and personal development. Our comprehensive RSHE curriculum The Brunswick Project, is designed to guide children through key aspects of well-being as they grow. Through this curriculum, children learn about health, safety (both online and offline), emotional well-being, managing relationships, and respecting diversity. They also explore the concept of global citizenship, gaining an understanding of the wider world and its challenges. We incorporate current affairs into lessons to help children stay informed about the ever-changing world around them, and RSHE learning extends across assemblies, topic work, special curriculum days, and interventions, as well as being embedded in the school's ethos.

At Brunswick, we believe primary school should be a time full of memorable experiences that children will cherish for a lifetime. Our pupils have the opportunity to be involved in a wide range of activities, such as joining a sports team, learning a musical instrument, taking part in the school council, or supporting younger children as playground buddies. These activities foster a sense of responsibility and involvement, which is at the heart of being a Brunswick pupil. We also offer two
residential trips, in Year 4 and Year 6, which are seen as important milestones in our curriculum. These trips are much anticipated by both students and staff, and provide invaluable learning experiences beyond the classroom.

At Brunswick, every child is given the support, encouragement, and opportunities they need to flourish, both academically and personally, ensuring they are well-prepared for the future.
